So much of what we're called to do is so much simpler than we think.

So vieles von dem, was wir zu tun aufgefordert werden, ist so viel einfacher als wir denken.

I'm prone to complicating things, or borrowing trouble. I try to look too far into the future. I make unfair comparisons and imagine all the grim ways the train may miss the rails.

Ich bin anfällig dafür Dinge zu komplizieren, mir Ärger einzuhandeln. Ich versuche, weit in die Zukunft zu schauen. Ich stelle unfaire Vergleiche an und stelle mir all die schlimmen Arten vor, auf die ein Zug entgleisen könnte.

In the end, I'm usually asked to simply walk beside the hurting or the disadvantaged. I'm not called to fix them or even to teach them. I keep them company and remind them they're not alone. I offer support in the form of hand-me-down clothes, cases of toilet paper, an invitation to dinner, a full-on laugh - because they're funny, and I want them to know it.

Doch letztendlich, werde ich normalerweise nur gebeten, einfach nur neben den Verletzten und Benachteiligten einherzugehen. Ich bin nicht dazu da, sie zu heilen oder zu unterrichten. Ich leiste ihnen Gesellschaft und erinnere sie daran, daß sie nicht allein sind. Ich biete Unterstützung in Form von abgelegten Klamotten an, von Toilettenpapier, eine Einladung fürs Abendbrot, ein Lachen aus vollem Halse - weil sie lustig und witzig sind, und ich möchte, daß sie es wissen.

I get to know them right where they are. I become part of their life and bring them into mine.

Ich lerne sie, wo sie leben, richtig kennen. Ich werde Teil ihres Lebens und integriere sie in meines.

This is investing, I think. It feels small, but it isn't.

Das genau bedeutet "investieren", denke ich. Es scheint nur gering zu sein, ist es aber nicht.
